The Man Downstairs

Sometimes I wonder. How much do we appreciate those people who do menial jobs such as mopping floors, garbage collection, dishwashing, housework in general, janitor jobs etc? Well do you, as an individual appreciate them for the much effort they put into their jobs? As in, everyday we get to the office finding it clean and well kept. No litter on the floor. At exactly 10 am 0r 3 pm, tea is on your work station. And I believe many of us including me overlook this basic acts of j0bs time to time without realizing how important are the people who perform them. They are part and parcel of any organizational structure of any institution. They are meant to be accorded the same respect that a company boss is given. Okay, they may be of lower job class but still they are human beings with emotions & feelings that are common in all human beings. Do you have the audacity to say hallo each morning and goodbye every evening to them? Do you sacrifice time to have a chat with them or do you prefer bonding with your well cultured office buddies? Stop and ask yourself, “Can I do without the janitor?” Okay, you might have a degree and he doesn’t even have a high school certificate but that does not give you the right to mistreat or ignore him /her? In Romans 12:3 we are told “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgement, with accordance with the measure of faith God has given you”. And in the same chapter verse 16:”Live in harmony with one another . Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.” So next please say hallo to the security man (watchman) as he opens the gate for you. It doesn’t hurt to say hallo. You never know. A conservation may take off from that simple greeting.
